Gettysburg definitely lived up to its billing! We were simply awed at all that is here, and I felt very much like I did when we went to the bombing site at the Federal Building in Oklahoma City last year. It was a very overwhelming and thoughtful couple of days. Not only historical, but so very beautiful, with amazing views seemingly around every turn.
I found it really interesting to see how many different ways the battles here were presented, and felt that each different presentation we saw added yet another layer to our final perspective on the events of those 3 days in history. We really enjoyed our time here, and I am impressed that the areas of the actual battlefields are being returned to how they existed during that era in history, as much as possible.
We visited the Visitor's Center, where we saw the Cyclorama Painting created int 1890, showing Pickett's Charge. That was truly breath-taking! The museum there was also interesting and well laid out.
We went from there to a 2 hour long bus tour through the battlefields and I really enjoyed that perspective from an expert on all things Gettysburg. We then visited several different attractions showing the battles in dioramas, multimedia shows and various other ways. The David Wills house was quite interesting, since that is where Lincoln spent the night before his Gettysburg Address, given at the dedication of the newly created National Cemetery. All in all, an overwhelming and educational experience which we both really enjoyed.
