After a few weeks of forced inactivity due to surgery, the ice storm and a week away for a wedding and family visit, hubby was quite happy to be back to puttering around in the camper! He still is limited in what he can do, since his right wrist and hand are still in a brace, but he pushes on. He has installed a new outdoor plug connected to two indoor plugs, to allow us to run our little electric heaters without going through the camper circuitry. I saw this idea on a forum right after he had mentioned to me that the wires in the bedroom were heating up some when we ran the heaters. He noticed this when he was moving outlets when the walls were out in the bedroom. We have been using them a lot lately, trying to keep warm enough out there to work in the ridiculously cold weather we have had in SC this winter. Now, we can run an extension cord directly to the campground's 20 amp outlet for our heaters. He was able to run the wiring where the outdoor shower had been, so it worked out well. There is now a new outlet in the living room and another in the bedroom.
He has also created a headboard for us from two old cabinet doors. He cut the long one in half and inserted the short one upright between the two pieces. We have decided to do the same color scheme on the upper cabinets in the bedroom slide area as well. The "shadow" area between the raised panel and frame on the doors will be a chocolate brown, which I think will be quite pretty. That man is so creative, he figured out how to create the headboard, and I selected the color scheme. We make a good pair!
During our forced inactivity, we did do LOTS of planning and ordering:
We decided to go with an 11" foam mattress. Hubby is going to build a new plywood box to bolt to the metal bed frame, then we will staple down a dust ruffle to cover the underbed boxes will will use for shoe storage and coat storage. These used to fit under the old benches and held our pots and pans and appliances for the kitchen. He found some old wooden legs that are 8" tall, which he will put on the metal bed frame to raise it up enough to accept the boxes. When we are traveling, the bed will be flipped on its side and strapped in front of the slide using eyebolts on either side of the slide. This will hopefully keep the drawers closed as well as freeing up a good bit of floor space to store the lawn chairs and other miscellaneous items when we are in transit.
After the nasty ice storm, we had a big discussion about generators, and have decided we are going to get a bigger on to use for the camper as well as to run the pump for our well, freezer, refrigerator and some lights in the house, if we end up without power again. This way, we can choose to dry camp occasionally at Walmart, etc. when we are on long trips.
During our forced inactivity, we did do LOTS of planning and ordering:
- ordered and received the Allure flooring for the living room/kitchen and bathroom,
- designed the drawer storage area to go in the bedroom slide,
- ordered and received our new toilet,
- designed the headboard, found the mattress we are going to order when the time comes and
- figured out the bed design and underbed storage.
